Pop Culture: Best VMA Moments of All Time

2011_vma_logoscreen.jpg

MTV is gearing up for its annual Video Music Awards to be held this Sunday.  You can watch at 8:00pm central time.  In honor of this year's VMA's I decided to put together what I think are some of the show's greatest moments in history. You can check out MTV's picks here.

By the way, this year's VMA's will pay homage to the Femme Fatale herself, the legendary Ms. Britney Spears.

On to the countdown!

10. Janet Jackson - That's the Way Love Goes and If

Oh the 90s. Janet. era Janet Jackson performs a sultry version of her R&B hit That's the Way Love Goes (I spy Jennifer Lopez as a backup dancer). Janet breaks it down with an amazing, hard hitting dance heavy stage show of If. Wow!!! Ms. Jackson if you NASTY...

9. TLC No Scrubs (with Prince's introduction)

TLC - T-Boz, Chilli and Left Eye - paved the way for so many girl groups and performers of today. This video is also amazing for the Purple One's introduction of these fly ladies at the 1999 Video Music Awards. TLC partied like it was 1999 with their high energy super hot rendition of No Scrubs.

8. Beyonce - Single Ladies

Yo Kanye, I was gonna put you on this list, but I'd rather let you bask in the glory of your new album with Jay-Z….but Beyonce had one of the best VMA performances of all time. Check out those lasers and Queen Bey werqin' it in that bedazzled leotard. You run this world Bey.

7. Britney Spears - Oops I did It Again

Speaking of the living legend, Britney Spears has many amazing VMA performances (hence why she's receiving top honors this year) but this is the moment that made every person say…wow…Britney's not that innocent.

6. Lil Kim, Mary J Blige and Diana Ross present an award.

Say what? That's not a performance! Yeah but this moment is not only historical for the sheer presence alone of Diana Ross (and that hair…she's older than me and will look better in a black leather dress than I ever will…wow). I'll let you watch the moment for yourselves. Don't worry Lil Kim, I'd never remember my lines on live TV either if that happened to me.

5. Lady Gaga - Paparazzi

Lady Gaga's had a lot of memorable VMA moments in her short VMA career, including wearing fajitas to accept an award presented by Cher. In this video however, watch as Mother Monster performs Paparazzi. In news they say if it bleeds it leads…so…well, there's definitely stage blood here so A+ Gaga.

4. Janet Jackson's Tribute to Michael Jackson - SCREAM

Scream is my favorite music video of all time. It's hard to believe the video debuted in 1995 considering the cutting edge special effects, killer dance moves and futuristic set. When Janet Jackson announced she'd be performing the song with Michael's image as a tribute I had my box of tissues ready to go. Insider note, Janet has said that the breakdown in Scream is very painful because of the physical demand, and at 44 years old Janet werqs it through the pain of the breakdown in Scream to pay tribute to her big brother. (Pay attention to Beyonce's audience reaction)

3. Madonna - Like A Virgin

Oh 1984, an era of lace, big frizzy hair and Madonna. Hey, doesn't 2011 kinda sound like 1984? Enjoy this groundbreaking, controversial performance from the Queen of Pop, which has now been reenacted by cats.

2. Madonna, Britney Spears and that Singer Kiss Up a Controversy

I  debated posting this video really because if I couldn't decide which Madonna moment was my favorite. Who could forget Courtney Love going cray cray by tossing compacts and makeup at the Queen of Pop while she was interviewed on the red carpet. Nonetheless, a VMA list would not be a list without Madonna locking lips with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. (Just check out Mary J. Blige's reaction)

1. Michael Jackson's Greatest Hits ft. Slash

I am biased but Michael Jackson has not only made MTV what it is today but also made the VMA's what they are today. Remember his kiss with Lisa Marie Presley? His VMA win award speech with little sister Janet for Scream? His birthday cake from Britney Spears? Well, when it comes down to it Michael is best known for his groundbreaking performances and in 1995 Michael brought down the house with his greatest hits medley, with a little help from Slash. By the way, check out Michael's short middle parted super cute 90s hair…aww.

There you have it!  What are your favorite VMA performances?
