Kicking off the Latina Leadership Institute
I'm thankful that in my career I get to be surrounded by a lot of fabulous women. PR is a female dominated industry and our agency is owned by a female. In fact, most of our leadership team is comprised of females. I recently had the honor of being accepted into the inaugural class of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's Latina Leadership Institute, a class aimed at helping Latinas build the skills they need to be elected to office, serve on boards and commissions and make a difference in our communities. This past Friday our first class focused a lot on using our natural "Latina" traits as a foundation to build influence and credibility. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this issue and it always reminds me of a scene in Selena where Selena's father is telling her she basically has to be white enough for the Americans and Mexican enough for the Hispanics. It's a constant struggle, especially for someone like me who doesn't fluently speak Spanish and who now has an Anglo last name. Still, what I was born with can't be taken away and I wear my "Latina" culture with pride. It's not what defines me, but it's part of who I am and I am proud of it.
I can't wait to continue to learn from these fabulous ladies!
